SPH takes two gold awards

Singapore Press Holdings emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 2013 Asian Media Awards organised by WAN-IFRA, with two gold awards and six wins in total.

The media company won two gold awards: one for best in newspaper marketing for bilingual freesheet – My Paper’s marketing campaign – and the other for best in community service for a teachers’ handbook produced by the media company’s education team.

My Paper’s marketing campaign included not only traditional advertising, but a flash mob of 40 cyclists reading the newspaper in Singapore’s CBD.

Head of creative services, product branding and promotions in SPH’s marketing division Tommy Lim said he was “over the moon” to have been honoured for such a creative advertising campaign, what he says is “the way of the future”.

“The win shows that creativity and innovative ideas continue to be the key to getting results,” Mr Lim said.

“While the media space may become more crowded and competitive, creativity in communication, advertising and events is still the key differentiating factor in creating the intended impact in the marketplace.”

The media company also received a gold award for a teachers’ handbook produced by The Straits Times’ schools team, titled “48 Values from the News: The Straits Times Guide to Building Character”.

The handbook highlights now teachers can use the news and newspapers to teach children moral values.

SPH’s flagship newspaper The Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez said his schools team was always looking to further education in Singapore any way it could.

“This enterprising team strives to keep coming up with creative and interesting ways to help teachers in the classroom and engage our younger readers,” Mr Fernandez said.

“Winning these international awards will be a strong encouragement to the team to keep innovating.”

Now into its 12th year, the Asian Media Awards is organised by WAN-IFRA, which represents more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and more than 3000 media companies in more than 120 countries.
