How newspapers reported MH17

How newspapers reported MH17

Last week Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down by a ground-to-air missile over Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers and crew.

The shocking news came just four months after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which still has not been found.

Here is a selection of front pages that hit the news stands on the Friday and Saturday after news of the crash was announced, a cross-section of how newspapers reacted to the tragedy.

Due to time zone differences, most Australian newspapers did not print the news until the Saturday July 19 paper, however a special edition of Herald Sun was printed the morning of Friday July 18. Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston told Media Watch that six editorial staff members came in at 3.45AM Friday morning to produce the special edition paper, as Mr Johnston “felt this story was of such local, national and international significance it was important we use our print edition to inform Victorians of the tragic events”.
