Fairfax appoints Victorian metro publisher

Mark Hawthorne

Experienced journalist Mark Hawthorne has been appointed to Fairfax Media’s newly created position of Publisher, Victoria, for Australian Metro Publishing.

Mr Hawthorne has been with the company for the past 13 years, working across news, business, politics and sport. He has been a senior editor at The Age since 2013. Prior to joining Fairfax in 2004, Mr Hawthorne held senior editorial positions at the Sunday Business newspaper in London, before moving to Conde Nast.

The new role will not affect current editorial structures. Mr Hawthorne will report directly to managing director of Australian Metro Publishing, Chris Janz.

Mr Janz said Mr Hawthorne’s experience and company knowledge made him the perfect candidate for the role. He said Mr Hawthorne would work closely with The Age editor Alex Lavelle and his editorial leaders, together with the company’s Melbourne-based commercial team.

Mr Hawthorne has held several roles at Fairfax Media, including national business editor of Fairfax’s metropolitan mastheads, encompassing BusinessDay sections of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, as well as the Money, Executive Style and My Small Business titles.
