Newspapers take the cream over coffee or tea

This slide provides evidence of the huge level of consumer expenditure on newspapers. The comparison to spend on another everyday purchase, tea & coffee, helps to put the figure in a relevant context.

Consumers spend vs coffee

Newspapers differ from other main media (TV, Radio, Internet) in that people pay to consume them.  The fact that consumers hand over money for them is indicative of a level of affinity and engagement that other media struggle to match.  This engagement is attractive to advertisers, as an engaging environment is recognised as benefitting the transmission of advertising messages.
