Newspapers differ from other main media (TV, Radio, Internet) in that people pay to consume them.  The fact that consumers hand over money for them is indicative of a level of affinity and engagement that other media struggle to match.  This engagement is attractive to advertisers, as an engaging environment is recognised as benefitting the transmission of advertising messages.
